What’s Happening?

This weekend is the second race of Amazon Prime’s coverage of NASCAR Cup Series action, as all three NASCAR National Series head to Tennessee’s Nashville Superspeedway. Here’s everything you need to know about this weekend’s race in Lebanon, Tennessee.

  • Nashville Superspeedway opened in 2001. Although the track is called a superspeedway, it isn’t a superspeedway, let alone a true intermediate track. At 1.330 miles, it measures just shy of the 1.5-mile length used for those tracks and far from the 2.5 miles cited for a superspeedway. This odd naming choice, however, does not detract from one of NASCAR’s most unique venues.
  • The NASCAR Xfinity Series was the first series to race at the track in 2001, followed by the Truck Series that same year. Despite lacking a Cup Series date, the track became a staple of both series until 2011. However, as part of a 2021 revival, the track regained not only the two lower series but also its first Cup Series date.
  • The race at Nashville always feels like the start of summer. With the Coca-Cola 600 in the review mirror, fans have a chance to see who the real title contenders are.

Top Storylines of the Weekend

  • This weekend at Nashville Superspeedway, a unique portion of the schedule starts. Several tracks, unlike any others on the schedule, line up for the final four races of Prime Video’s NASCAR coverage. These include this concrete 1.330-mile track, Michigan, the three-turn Pocono, and NASCAR’s return to Mexico.
  • We are now leading into the stretch for NASCAR’s first-ever in-season tournament. This tournament will last the entirety of TNT’s five-race coverage and pit drivers head to head until two face off for one million dollars during the Brickyard 400. This is the final tune-up for drivers before NASCAR collects stats to seed drivers starting next weekend at Pocono.
  • Last season, Joey Logano had an unlikely victory at Nashville Superspeedway. This race could have decided the whole season last year, as Logano would have narrowly made the playoffs without an automatic qualification. Little did we know at the time that he would turn this one win into a playoff birth, three more playoff wins, and a Cup Series Championship.
