What’s Happening?
The NASCAR National Series heads south of the border for the first time since 2008 as the NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series head to Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez for a doubleheader weekend of road course action.
- Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, built in 1959, is located in Mexico City, Mexico, and has multiple layouts used by multiple series. Most fans are familiar with the 2.674-mile, 17-turn Grand Prix Circuit, used by Formula One; NASCAR races on a 15-turn, 2.417-mile version of the track.
- This race weekend is a long time coming, as though the track is almost as old as some fan favorites on the Cup Series calendar; this is the first time the series will race in Mexico. That being said, the Xfinity Series raced on the track from 2005 to 2008.
- This weekend only features action from two of the three NASCAR National Series and two of NASCAR’s four nationwide touring series. However, it maintains triple header status as the NASCAR Mexico Series will race twice this weekend, with the Ricardo Rodriguez 120 on Friday and the Pedro Rodriguez 100 on Saturday.

Top Storylines of the Weekend
- This is the first NASCAR National Series race weekend at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez since 2008. Though the Xfinity Series has raced here in the past, this is the first time that the Cup Series will ever race in Mexico. The 2.417-mile, 15-turn layout is new to both series, as the Xfinity Series raced on a 2.518-mile, 8-turn layout during its time at the track from 2005 to 2008.
- This weekend starts a period of major implications for “Road Course Ringers” in both the NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series. With 11 Cup Series races to the Playoffs, there are four road course races, and in the Xfinity Series, with 12 till their playoffs, there are five. Drivers like Shane van Gisbergen, Connor Zilisch, and Michael McDowell can all utilize these races to propel themselves into the Championship picture as the cutoff approaches.
- This race is the second seeding race of NASCAR‘s new in-season tournament. This tournament, dubbed the In-Season Challenge, will pit each driver one-on-one during five races in TNT‘s portion of the schedule. The final race will be at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with two drivers facing off during the Brickyard 400 for $1 million. Over the next three races, all of which will air on Prime Video, finishing spots of the current top 32 drivers will be collected to decide seating for this tournament set to kick off on June 28 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
