In NASCAR, “Gimmicks” are loathed by many, but, in 2011, a more interesting and popular one emerged. Eric Estepp takes a look back at the fad that was the “Two Car Tandem”
- We have to go back to the 1980s to understand how this came about. The result of some rule changes was the rise of “Pack racing” at Daytona and Talladega.
- The “Two car Tandem” saw some experimentation throughout the late 2000s, but, in 2011, it shined. “It takes two to tango” went to a new level.
- However, tandem drafting was not popular with anyone. In 2012, more rule changes discouraged tandem drafting, but, that does not mean it is gone.
