What’s Happening?
Despite positive fan reception after Phoenix, NASCAR is not expected to have teams choose between multiple tire compounds, such as the Primary and Option tires, at any other races this season.
Tires for Martinsville weekend are the same as November. No two different versions of tires this weekend and not expected to have teams choose among two versions (primary and an option) during a race again this year.

- NASCAR was not expected to bring the Option tire back to Martinsville this weekend; however, Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports now claims that NASCAR is not expected to use this concept again this season.
- The Option tire, which NASCAR has sporadically tested since May’s All-Star Race, has a softer compound than the Primary or regular tire. The tire made it’s 2025 debut at Phoenix, where teams were allowed six “Primary” tire sets during the race alongside two sets of “Option” tires.
- This created a healthy amount of strategy and interesting racing, as some drivers, like Kaulig Racing’s Ty Dillon, saved his tires to attempt a late run for the win while others burned theirs up quickly. Fans had a great reception to this race, with some dubbing it the best at Phoenix in recent years.
- Tire changes have followed years of lackluster racing from NASCAR’s Next Gen car on short tracks. To fix this, NASCAR first attempted numerous package changes to the car before testing a softer “Option” tire at North Wilkesboro and Richmond last season.
