What’s Happening?

JD Motorsports, a longtime competitor in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, is reportedly in financial turmoil. Public records indicate that JD Motorsports recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and the team took even more drastic measures on Monday as Toby Christie reports that the team laid off a host of employees as they walked in the door on Monday morning. Bob Pockrass reports that the team’s debts are around $436,000, and it’s uncertain if the team will end up in Chapter 7 liquidation.

  • JD Motorsports has had some major issues in recent weeks. Both entries failed to qualify for the Xfinity Series Chicago Street Race in early July, and in the middle of the following week, the team withdrew the No. 6 car fielded for Garrett Smithley. Christie reports that the No. 6 car was prepared for the weekend before team members discovered via the official entry list that it had been withdrawn.
  • JD Motorsports has been a mainstay of the Xfinity Series for over two decades. They are best known for helping launch Ross Chastain’s career, as he raced for the team from 2015 through 2019. His and the team’s best season in 2018, as Chastain competed in 30 out of 33 races for the team, making the Xfinity Series Playoffs via a win with Chip Ganassi Racing at Las Vegas
  • Fans are upset to see JD Motorsports have these issues. Seeing a race team struggle is never fun, especially if it’s a team that’s been in the sport for as long as JD Motorsports has.
