- Chase Elliott right-hooked Denny Hamlin following contact off of turn four during the Coca-Cola 600. The wreck was immediately called out as retaliation by Clint Bowyer and Hamlin, but Elliott denied it in his post race interview
- This penalty is consistent with NASCAR’s penalization of Bubba Wallace last season at Las Vegas. Wallace was suspended one race for intentionally wrecking Kyle Larson. NASCAR did not comment about playoff waivers, but Bob Pockrass noted that Elliott would have to request another playoff wiaver following the suspension.
- Fans are upset at the situtation, but most generally understand why Elliott was penalized the way that he was.
