What’s Happening?

NASCAR Vice President of Competition Elton Sawyer doubled down on NASCAR’s call of the controversial restart at Richmond in a confusing statement on NASCAR Race Hub. Sawyer said that NASCAR made the “Correct call” given the information they had at the time, but, he also later reiterated that Denny Hamlin did “Roll” before the restart box, which is against the rules. He also stated that the call may have been different if it happened at a different point in the race.

  • Sawyer angered fans earlier in the day by making a similar statement on Sirius XM NASCAR Radio. While he did not state whether or not he felt the call was correct, he did admit that Hamlin accelerated early and that the call may have been different if it happened at a different point in the race.
  • The newest comments on Fox are quite confusing and contradictory. If the call was “Correct”, then why would Sawyer admit that Hamlin broke the rules? Regardless, it is now in the past, and nothing can be done to change the result at this point.
  • Fans are beginning to grow weary of this discussion since it has dominated the headlines in the early part of the week. Sawyer’s comments show that NASCAR is digging their heels in, so, the situation is what it is.
