What’s Happening?

In what may be the most shocking racing news of the NASCAR Playoffs, a new report says that a NASCAR engineer sold “intellectual property” to another team.

  • We know little about the situation other than a key figure involved is a Joe Gibbs Racing engineer with an expiring contract. That engineer allegedly sold car setup information to a team that currently has no playoff cars.
  • Teams that currently have multiple cars but none that qualified for the playoffs include Kaulig Racing, Legacy Motor Club, Richard Childress Racing, Rick Ware Racing, and Spire Motorsports.

  • According to Jenna Fryer of AP Sports, who initially reported this story, NASCAR is aware of the situation. However, NASCAR cannot take action until the involved parties file a lawsuit or formal complaint.
  • Setups are the competitive lifeblood of NASCAR. As stock cars become more similar, teams are less able to “bend the rules,” and setup information is more crucial than ever. Teams will even blur social media posts that may give away the tiniest bit of information.

  • This story is just one of many controversies for NASCAR this month. Others include multiple complaints about the clarity of its Damaged Vehicle Policy, unclear or inconsistent judgment calls, Alex Bowman’s disqualification at Charlotte, and 23XI and Front Row Motorsports’ antitrust suit against NASCAR.

This is a developing story.
