What’s Happening? A private plane, reportedly owned by former NASCAR Cup Series driver Greg Biffle, has crashed near Statesville Regional Airport…
Statesville Regional Airport, a small private airport near Charlotte, first confirmed the crash at 10:15 AM ET.
At the time, there were initially no reports as to who was on board the plane, beyond a report from the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office that there were passenger casualties.
The 1981 Cessna Citation with tail number N257BW was owned by GB Aviation Leasing LLC, which WSOC-TV in Charlotte initially reported shared the same address as former Roush Racing standout driver Greg Biffle.
In a post on Facebook, Biffle’s friend Garrett Mitchell, better known by his screen name, Cleetus McFarland, confirmed that the Biffle family, including Greg, his wife, daughter, and son, were on board the plane. Shortly after this post, local station WCNC-TV noted that Biffle and the family had passed in a livestream newscast.

Late Thursday afternoon, the families of those involved in the crash, which resulted in seven casualties, issued a statement confirming the passing of Greg, his wife Cristina, their son Ryder, his daughter Emma, as well as Dennis Dutton, his son Jack Dutton, and Craig Wadsworth.

After working his way through grassroots racing and ARCA, Biffle made his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series debut in 1998 with Roush Racing.
In 1999, Biffle would win a then record nine races (a record that stood until 2025), but fell short of the series championship. Though a more consistent 2000 season with five wins would net him this title.
The Washington native then advanced to the NASCAR Busch Series in 2001, where he, once again, impressed in year one and won a title in 2002.
After working his way through the lower divisions of NASCAR, Biffle went on to race in the Cup Series with Roush full-time from 2003 to 2016. During this period, he tallied 19 wins and had multiple championship-caliber seasons.
After his abrupt retirement, Biffle returned to the Truck Series for a one-off race with Kyle Busch Motorsports in 2019, winning this one-off race at Texas Motor Speedway. He eventually returned for a part-time Cup Series schedule in 2022 with NY Racing Team.
As of 2025 has not fully retired from racing, making occasional appearances in the ARCA Menards Series West in 2024 and 2025.
Biffle, beyond his skills in NASCAR, was a well-known aviator in both airplanes and helicopters, and volunteered to help with recovery during 2024’s Hurricane Helene, utilizing his helicopter to deliver supplies to remote and hard-to-reach portions of Western North Carolina.
Due to these actions and his online presence, he also became a fan favorite following his retirement, earning the moniker of “The Biff.”
The former champion also played a role in one of the biggest storylines of the 2026 NASCAR season, helping his friend Garrett Mitchell, better known by his screen name, Cleetus McFarland, break into the ARCA Menards Series.
