What’s Happening?
One of NASCAR’s most daunting challenges lies in front of the NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series this weekend. The Charlotte Roval returns for its seventh season in NASCAR, and now, more than ever, drivers will be desperate to walk out of Charlotte with a trophy.
- Charlotte Motor Speedway is NASCAR’s home track. Located in Concord, North Carolina, it shares its hometown with Trackhouse Racing, RFK Racing, and, most notably, Hendrick Motorsports. CMS opened in 1965 and opened its series altering Roval concept in 2018. The layout is a hybrid of an intermediate oval and a road course.
- The Xfinity Series has raced on the Roval since its 2018 opening. The track plays a significant part in the Series championship as the cutoff for the first round of the playoffs. In the Xfinity Series, Chevrolet has notably won five of six races, all of which consecutively.
- The Cup Series race on the Roval is a must-watch TV event. Since its debut in 2018, the series has averaged 7.83 cautions per race on the Roval. Chevrolet has also dominated the Cup Series races at the track, winning four of six races.
- The track has always been a playoff race and is one of a few tracks to maintain its spot as the 32nd race in 2025. However, the Truck Series is adding a race date on the Roval on Oct. 3, 2025.

What To Watch For
Xfinity Series
- The Xfinity Series Playoffs roll into Charlotte after a chaotic Talladega Race. Unfortunately, the Roval is just as disjointed. Currently, the cutline shockingly features a host of veterans. Justin Allgaier, Parker Kligermann,
- Shane Van Gisbergen and Sam Mayer all face elimination when entering Roval. Notably, Mayer is the reigning Robal winner in the Xfinity Series. Hopefully, he can rebound with a back-to-back win at the Roval.
- However, history can tell us a story of what to look for this weekend. Shane Van Gisbergen has a chance to move on to the second round of the Playoffs, winning three of four road course races in the series this season. Furthermore, one driver currently above the cutline has a standout chance of winning. A.J. Allmendinger is a five-time roval winner, having won in either the Cup or Xfinity Series since 2019. If A.J. can win this weekend, it will be another notch in the Road Course ace’s belt.
Cup Series
- The NASCAR Cup Series playoffs are playing out pretty typically. However, cutline drivers like Daniel Suarez and Austin Cindric have a history of winning on road courses. But, one cutoff driver, Chase Briscoe, won the first-ever Xfinity Series race on the hybrid layout. With the weight of SHR and a bright future on his shoulders, Briscoe is a worthwhile storyline to watch out for this weekend.
- Otherwise, the track has a history of wild and chaotic racing. However, the competitiveness of those races changed largely with the introduction of the Next-Gen car in 2022. Despite the struggles of the new car, desperation, and Playoff upsets could play a major role in risk-taking and daring moves this weekend. Speaking of Playoff upsets, A.J. Allmendinger has also entered the Cup Series race. Will he have the first Roval sweep in NASCAR history?
