What’s Happening?
When Martin Truex Jr. announced he was stepping away from running full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series after the season, he kept the door open to race part-time. Well, he teased some of his plans for 2025 on the Dale Jr Download, saying that he will “Probably” race in the 2025 Daytona 500.
- Martin Truex Jr. is not retiring from racing altogether. He’s just stepping away from full-time completion. He joins many drivers who stay in the sport part-time to scratch that racing itch. Examples include Aric Almirola, Jimmie Johnson, and Mark Martin.
- Truex Jr.’s resume also has one glaring omission: he has not won the Daytona 500. That would give him all the motivation in the world to race in Daytona.
- Fans are happy that Martin Truex Jr. continues to race beyond 2024. They can still watch him race, albeit in a slightly lower capacity.
What Truex Jr. Had to Say
On the Dale Jr. Download, Truex Jr. mentioned that he is just starting to plan what races he will run in 2025. He seems open to anything and even mentioned splitting a car with his brother, Ryan Truex. However, his p
it’s almost a guarantee right now I feel like that I’ll probably run the Daytona 500. [It’s] not a done deal yet, but I feel like it shouldn’t be too hard to finish that up. Honestly, after that, I don’t know exactly. I’ll definitely run a few Xfinity races. I don’t know if that’s two or if that’s five or six. We’re just starting to talk about it now, so we got to kind of look at the schedule, see what where I would like to run if we can make that all work. I feel like it’d be cool to do a little bit more, if I had to, to get something going for Ryan [Truex]. If we could split a car for a certain amount of races, or do something like that I would be interested in that. I don’t know, maybe maybe even a few Truck races here and there if I could put something together
Martin Truex Jr.
While we don’t know yet who Martin Truex Jr. will run the Daytona 500 with, should the deal come together, Denny Hamlin told the media after Truex Jr.’s announcement that a Daytona 500 entry is “Ready” for Truex Jr. to hop in. Obviously, that was a spur-of-the-moment comment, but it would make sense as it would keep Truex Jr. within Gibbs-affiliated equipment.
Regardless, Truex Jr. has come incredibly close to winning the “Great American Race,” losing by 0.01 seconds to, ironically enough, Denny Hamlin in 2016.
As far as the Xfinity Series, Truex Jr. will still be a Joe Gibbs Racing employee as an ambassador, meaning JGR and Toyota are probably as far as he can trek. Maybe he could get an outside opportunity at Sam Hunt Racing, but that’s uncertain. If he races in the Truck Series, he could slot into the TRICON Garage All-Star Truck, the No. 1, but time will tell if or when that works out.
What’s most interesting is admitting he would be willing to help his brother, Ryan Truex. While Ryan is very talented, he doesn’t bring the financial backing that Martin does with Bass Pro Shops. In his 17 career starts for Joe Gibbs Racing in the Xfinity Series, he has been sponsored by Toyota or JGR in 15 of them, with Auto-Owners Insurance, a Martin Truex Jr. sponsor, taking one race, and ShopUSAPickleball.com sponsoring his effort at Martinsville in 2022.
Could Martin bring some funding to help Ryan run a few more races? One thing is for sure: Ryan can win races, and he needs some financial backing to get a bigger opportunity. This will be an interesting story to watch.
Truex Jr. did not say much about what races he would compete in, but fans should keep an eye on some of his best tracks. Places like Dover and Sonoma come to mind here. Maybe New Hampshire and Pocono, which are closer to his childhood hometown in New Jersey. Ultimately, time will tell what he does.
