What’s Happening?
In a week of throwback paint schemes for the Darlington weekend, it’s difficult for a non-throwback to stand out. However, Kyle Larson’s 2025 Indy 500/Coke 600 scheme does exactly that, featuring a sleek combination of McLaren’s papaya orange and Hendrick’s iconic blue.

Kyle Larson is set to attempt “The Double” for the second consecutive year on May 25th, competing in both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600. In 2024, Larson’s plans were frustrated by the weather. Rain delayed the start of the Indianapolis 500, leading him to prioritize that race. He completed all 500 miles, starting fifth and finishing 18th due to a late-race speeding penalty. This delay caused him to miss the start of the Coca-Cola 600, in which Justin Allgaier filled in for the seat and finished 13th. The NASCAR race was eventually shortened due to the same rain that struck Indianapolis earlier that day, preventing Larson from participating.
Missing the Coca-Cola 600 had significant consequences, as Larson forfeited valuable points, ultimately losing the regular-season championship by a single point to Tyler Reddick, which cost him 5 additional playoff points. Despite this, NASCAR granted Larson a waiver, maintaining his playoff eligibility, a waiver which started a huge debate within the media and the fans over the rule, resulting in a change by NASCAR following that season.
For the 2025 attempt, Hendrick Motorsports has adjusted its strategy. Rick Hendrick, team owner, emphasized that NASCAR and the Coca-Cola 600 will be the priority. If delays interfere with the Indianapolis 500, Larson will leave to ensure his participation in the NASCAR event. In this scenario, veteran Tony Kanaan would replace Larson in the Arrow McLaren at Indianapolis. Larson expressed determination to complete “The Double” and aspired to contend for victories in both races. He stated, “I really want to complete all 1,100 miles, and I think we have the opportunity to battle for the win in both events.”
