What’s Happening?

Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johnson will make his final NASCAR Cup Series start next season in the 2027 Daytona 500, marking the end of a career that began in 2001.

  • Johnson, 50, retired from full-time NASCAR action in 2020 before returning as a part-time driver in 2023. Since 2023, he has entered every Daytona 500, only missing the 2021 and 2022 events since his 2002 full-time debut at Hendrick Motorsports.
  • Johnson announced this plan Saturday morning, joining his long-time friends Marty Smith and Ryan McGee of ESPN on their show, Marty & McGee. In a post to his social media, Johnson, who is slated to race at the San Diego Street circuit later this season, said, “Only three left! Let’s make them count.”
  • The former Hendrick Motorsports star, and seven-time Cup Series Champion, is likely turning his attentions to Legacy Motor Club. The team, of which he is now the majority owner, is expanding to three full-time cars in 2027, a move that many fans speculated would see Johnson move fully into his ownership role.
  • Though he can see the end of the tunnel, Johnson still has this weekend’s 500, the San Diego Street race at Naval Base Coronado, and a Truck Series race that same weekend to look forward to. In his 14 starts at LMC since 2023, Johnson has an average finish of 30.3 and a best finish of third in last year’s Daytona 500.
