What’s Happening?

Iowa Speedway hosted its first Cup Series on June 16 this season. Now, in a drastic shift, that date could be pushed back almost two months to Aug. 3.

  • Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa, is the second track in Iowa to host a NASCAR National Series race in the 21st Century. Notably, it is the only track in Iowa that hosted a NASCAR Cup Series race in the modern era. Iowa once looked lost to the NASCAR world, having been without a National Series race from 2019 to 2023. However, the loss of Auto Club after the 2023 season gained Iowa an Xfinity and Cup Series weekend in 2024
  • The race was successful, with a sellout crowd watching Ryan Blaney take the checkered flag. The weekend did see controversy, with a repave of the low line in the turns that looked sloppy and rushed to fans. This repave would become an issue of IndyCar a month after the Cup Series race.
  • Iowa was thought to maintain its race in 2025, including travel packages on its website stating the dates would be June 13 through 16. Connor Ferguson of Always Racing posted via X that he has received ticket renewal texts with the date Aug. 3 for the Cup Series race. This date would mean that the race weekend would be Aug. 1 through 3, previously held by Richmond in 2023.
  • These dates would schedule NASCAR in conflict with the Knoxville Nationals, the sprint car equivalent to the Daytona 500. The Knoxville, Iowa, track is only 45 minutes South of Iowa Speedway. The ten-day event would have conflict with the race schedule, specifically with the Capitani Classic, the Sunday night event at the track.
