What’s Happening?
Riddh Setty of Bloomberg Law reports that America First Legal, which is headed by Donald Trump’s former adviser Stephen Miller, requested the US Equal Opportunity Commission to investigate Rev Racing and NASCAR. The accusation was “Illegal discrimination against white, male Americans”.
Setty reports that AFL is specifically targeting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs, and this is far from the first company they have targeted.
You Need to Know:
- Rev Racing describes itself as the “Competition arm of NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity Program”. Alumni of the program include Bubba Wallace, Kyle Larson, and Daniel Suarez. NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity Program exists to help people from different backgrounds get involved in the sport. The mission is described as, “NASCAR Diversity & Inclusion strives to create an inclusive environment in all facets of the NASCAR industry recognizing the value of diversity, which allows us to go faster and farther in our workplaces, at the race track and in the stands”.
- According to Setty, this is not the first time that AFL has gone after these types of programs before. She mentions McDonald’s, Morgan Stanley, Major League Baseball, and Starbucks. Stephen Miller was a Senior Advisor to President Donald Trump, and Miller was also in charge of Trump’s speechwriting.
- Fans were primarily seen laughing this off, and many felt this was a ridiculous accusation. Others were laughing at the thumbnail featuring Jimmie Johnson in 2006.
In the Stands
Chad Summers, this does seem like an article in the Onion.
Well, they seem pretty serious it seems David A. Lawrence.
Jon Iaccino seemingly could not stop laughing at this.
Austonaut with another GIF to depict how crazy he felt this was.
LT called this stupid.
A very old photo of his car at that.
Colby Evans wanted to see this thrown out of court.
Time will tell how this case pans out, but, it is quite the crazy case. At the end of the day, diversity is a great thing for the sport, so, hopefully, this does not hamper those efforts.
