What’s Happening?

Ford Racing has announced that a new model of the Ford Mustang Dark Horse, the Dark Horse SC, will enter NASCAR for the 2027 season, replacing the current Dark Horse model used since 2024.

  • Ford Racing’s Global Director, Mark Rushbrook, made the announcement during Thursday’s Ford Racing Season Launch event. Flanking Rushbrook to announce this new body style, via a dramatic entrance, was Team Penske driver Ryan Blaney.
  • Shortly after Blaney joined him, Rushbrook confirmed that the body style would make its debut in the NASCAR Cup Series at the 2027 Daytona 500. After this confirmation, Ford drivers Chris Buescher, Zane Smith, and Joey Logano joined Blaney and Rushbrook alongside the Dark Horse SC.
  • When the Dark Horse SC debuts in 2027, it will mark the third version of the Mustang body style in the NASCAR Next Gen era (since 2022). This move marks a quick turnaround for Ford, which introduced a new body style, the Dark Horse, in 2024.
  • In fact, throughout the NASCAR Next Gen Car’s lifespan, each of NASCAR’s three current manufacturers has changed bodies at least once. Toyota most recently did so in 2024, and Chevrolet will introduce a newly altered version of the ZL1 body this season.
