What’s Happening?
Oddly, following their signing of Ryan Ellis, DGM Racing did not announce a car number for their new driver. However, Friday, 71 days before the Xfinity Daytona race, the team revealed the No. 71. This new number, as the team revealed, has a deep history with both the team and the driver.
- On Oct. 18, DGM Racing announced the signing of now-former Alpha Prime Racing driver Ryan Ellis. Ellis, now 35, is a longtime journeyman driver in the NASCAR National Series. In 2023, Ellis got his first shot at full-time action with APR, and he improved on that performance this past season, making Ellis a desirable free agent for a team like DGM.
- DGM is a fan-favorite underdog in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Family owned by Mario and Michelle Gosselin, the team has slowly climbed the NASCAR Xfinity Series ladder since their return in 2014.
- That is considered a return as the team ran their first race in 1998 with Mario behind the wheel of the No. 71 Chevy at Myrtle Beach Speedway. Now, that number returns home to DGM in 2025 as the team will enter Ellis in the No. 71.
- Ironically enough, Ellis also has a long history with the No. 71. Ellis, starting with his go-karting days, entered races in the number from a young age. Unfortunately, Ellis has not had a chance to run the number in a NASCAR race in any series.
- In a press release from DGM, Ellis said, “I ran the 71 on everything growing up: go karts, hockey jerseys, Legends cars, and even video games.” Whether this is a sign of great things to come for the team will be seen on track in 2025; however, this looks to be a solid signing for the up-and-coming team.
