What’s Happening?

Matt DiBenedetto still has not announced his plans for 2024. However, a surprising potential landing spot has emerged. Spencer Boyd is moving on from Young’s Motorsports to form his own team, Freedom Racing Enterprises. So, could DiBenedetto to Young’s Motorsports make any sense?

  • Matt DiBenedetto was released from Rackley W.A.R. three races early after announcing he would leave earlier in the season. He took the team to the Playoffs in 2023, and he won the team’s first race in 2022 at Talladega.
  • Young’s Motorsports has competed in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series since 2012. The team has raced full-time since 2014, and they have two wins at Talladega with Spencer Boyd in 2019 and Tate Fogelman in 2021.
  • Fans are always curious about Matt DiBenedetto’s plans. He is one of the most popular silly season stories to follow.

Why Young’s Motorsports Could Be a Good Fit for DiBenedetto

The timing between the two announcements is certainly interesting. Just before the New Year, DiBenedetto posted a “Pen” emoji. On Monday, January 8th, Boyd announced he would be moving on from Young’s Motorsports to form his own Truck Series team, Freedom Racing Enterprises.

There is a 99.9% chance that Boyd moving on had been in the works for a while. Boyd may have already told the team internally that he was moving on well before this announcement. DiBenedetto could have signed a contract with Young’s Motorsports before Boyd made the announcement.

So, the timing works out, but, what about DiBenedetto’s full-time options, or, lack thereof? There are not many full-time openings available. AM Racing was the first team many pointed to, but Bob Pockrass quenched those rumors.

In the Truck Series, Young’s Motorsports may be the only full-time seat DiBenedetto has left. It’s a seat that has won races in the past at Talladega, where DiBenedetto won his only Truck Series race.

It really comes down to if a better opportunity is available for DiBenedetto. If he wants to stay in the series where he has proven he can win and can compete for the Playoffs, Young’s Motorsports may be one of his only chances. However…

What Could Keep the Two Apart

First off, would DiBenedetto want to come to this team? Spencer Boyd failed to qualify for three races in 2023. He also failed to qualify for one race in 2022 and two races in 2021. This team does not field top equipment. Young’s Motorsports did have two top-10 finishes in 2023 with Kaden Honeycutt, but, that was more of an exception than the rule.

The second question is sponsorship. Does DiBenedetto have the sponsorship for a full-time Truck Series ride? He had Rackley Roofing sponsorship for most of the 2023 season, which came from Rackley W.A.R.’s namesake.

On top of that, DiBenedetto has a reputation for burning bridges. Rackley W.A.R. is the most recent example, but, DiBenedetto had ugly exits from Go Fas and The Wood Brothers in the Cup Series.

DiBenedetto is still waiting to announce his 2024 plans. Could Young’s Motorsports be his next team?
