Cleetus McFarland says he is still awaiting NASCAR approval to race in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race at Talladega Superspeedway, following his recent series debut at Rockingham.
Many NASCAR fans have called NASCAR’s approval of YouTube star Cleetus McFarland, whose real name is Garrett Mitchell, reckless.
Nonetheless, the sport did not clear the driver for every track when he signed his three-race developmental contract with Richard Childress Racing in March.
Per Mitchell, NASCAR left the 30-year-old with a stipulation, given his experience in the ARCA Menards Series and Craftsman Truck Series, saying that, depending on his performance at the 1-mile Rockingham Speedway, he could race in the series April 26 race at Talladega.
During the latest episode of his podcast, Bald Eagles, Mitchell offered an update on his approval after his somewhat lackluster afternoon at Rockingham this past weekend.
The Floridian says that he has yet to receive word from NASCAR, but expects a decision to be handed down by Tuesday, April 5.
“Now we gotta wait for approval for Talladega, which will come tomorrow,” Mitchell said.
While NASCAR’s looming decision is a major step for his racing career, Mitchell said during this episode that he doesn’t want anyone thinking he is pushing NASCAR to approve him, reiterating his stance that he took up an offer to race at this level given to him by RCR as opposed to seeking it out himself.
“I don’t care whether I’m approved or not. I did not come into this opportunity saying, ‘NASCAR needs to approve me.’ I never, in any instance, thought they should have approve me. I just got this opportunity and said, ‘Great, what can we do?’ And if they approve me to run Dega, I’m running.” — Cleetus McFarland
While Mitchell has not had any real setbacks in his NASCAR career, getting approval to race in his ARCA Menards Series debut last season and his Truck Series debut this season, his co-host, George Siciliano, has had issues in his own pursuits.
Siciliano, who wants to race in ARCA that weekend at Talladega with Mitchell, initially set out to race in the ARCA East race at Hickory, with hopes of approval for the ARCA race at Kansas Speedway, then hoping to be approved for Talladega.
Last week, NASCAR told Siciliano, known by his nickname Squirel McNutt, that he needed to race at Rockingham as well, with the 33-year-old scoring his first career top ten in that race, finishing ninth in a field of 22 cars.
