What’s Happening?
NASCAR is set to return to NBC Sports this weekend at Iowa, and the booth will look different. With Dale Earnhardt Jr. gone from the broadcast booth, NBC has announced that Brad Daugherty will take the empty slot as the fourth analyst at least this weekend at Iowa. Dale Jarrett also finds himself in a new role as a specialty reporter.
- Brad Daugherty is a co-owner of JTG-Daugherty Racing, which fields the NO. 47 car for Ricky Stenhouse Jr. He joined NASCAR broadcasting as a studio analyst for NASCAR on ESPN from 2007-2014 before joining NBC in 2020. The move gives NBC a diverse booth of analysts featuring a driver, crew chief, and team owner.
- It’s unclear if NBC will use this booth for the entire season. Adam Stern of Sports Business Journal reported in April that Leigh Diffey would take over for Rick Allen as the lead commentator sometime after the Olympic break, but NBC has yet to confirm that. NBC did not specify if they would return the “Radio Style” broadcasts on road courses either.
- Fans are interested in seeing how Daugherty does in the booth. This gives NBC a unique booth set up with multiple perspectives of the sport.
