What’s Happening?

For many years, NASCAR’s All-Star Race, an event hosted by track-owning organization Speedway Motorsports, had a home, Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina.

Still, as the sport entered a new era of scheduling, much like NASCAR, SMI took the 2020 COVID-19-affected season to move the event to Bristol Motor Speedway.

This started a trend of the race moving venues every few years, and this season, SMI made a choice that many fans felt was poor.

In an effort to grant North Wilkesboro Speedway a points race, its first since 1996, the sport moved the All-Star Race to Dover Motor Speedway, taking another points-race date from the northeast and kicking Dover off the points schedule for the first time since 1969.

SMI has repeatedly reaffirmed that, despite fears about the track’s future, Dover isn’t going anywhere.

During a recent appearance on Jeff Gluck’s Gluckcast podcast, Speedway Motorsports COO Mike Burch reaffirmed this stance.

He did so while directly addressing the rumors that the track is on the ropes, saying, “Again, there will be racing at Dover. This idea that Dover is on the decline or on the way out, no, there are too many passionate race fans, it’s one of our biggest selling races ticket-wise.”

But his talk didn’t stop there, with Burch seemingly suggesting that SMI is open to moving the All-Star Race again.

“We’ve shown that the All-Star race in its current format is a portable thing. You know, we’ve done it at Bristol and Texas and Charlotte, North Wilkesboro and Dover.” — Mike Burch, Speedway Motorsports COO

Burch continued by noting that the event differs from a points race. However, at the end of the day, it’s still racing, no matter when or where the event is.

He then doubled down on talk of moving the event, saying, “I think you’ll see the All-Star race continue to move around and maybe even evolve into something totally new and different going forward.”

Where Could SMI Move the All-Star Race

The All-Star Race has seen all types of tracks play host over its life span, with Atlanta Motor Speedway taking the honors in 1986, Bristol in 2020, Texas Motor Speedway in 2021 and 2022, and before Dover, North Wilkesboro from 2023 to 2025.

In his recent comments on Gluck’s podcast, Burch did not name any venues as of direct interest to SMI, though he did list New Hampshire and Las Vegas as examples.

Though New Hampshire might not be a dream location for the event, Las Vegas is one that fans think would be great. This is thanks in part to the city’s general nature and the fact that Las Vegas Motor Speedway already has two points dates, meaning Dover could get a date back.

Other places fans have suggested are EchoPark Speedway, Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway, and, of course, Charlotte.
