What’s Happening?

NASCAR Cup Series Trackhouse Racing teased the potential return of its PROJECT91 Open car in a new social media post Thursday night, raising questions among the NASCAR fanbase as to who could pilot the team’s open car.

In 2022, Trackhouse Racing became a trend setter in the NASCAR Cup Series garage, debuting a third part-time entry, PROJECT91, that would field all-star drivers from across the motorsports world.

Since then, similar entries at teams like RFK Racing and 23XI Racing have come and gone, and while PROJECT91 has not hit the track since early last season, the team has continued to carry an aura unmatched by those other open entries.

Earlier this month, a rumor spread that the team could return for the San Diego Street race, and while team owner Justin Marks did not confirm the team’s return, he did say that fans should not forget about the team.

Those remarks, from a media availability at Watkins Glen International, are now the center of attention again.

The team used this footage of Mark’s for the first post on the PROJECT91 social media accounts in nearly a year. Notably, the post featured a military-themed filter over the video of this press conference, perhaps hinting at the team’s rumored return at San Diego’s Naval Base Coronado.

While this is not a direct confirmation of a return, it hasn’t stopped fans from speculating who could be behind the wheel.

Who’s on Deck?

Of course, the biggest request from fans of PROJECT91 is for a Formula One driver to take the reins once again.

When the team debuted at Watkins Glen in 2022 and returned in 2023, former Formula One World Champion Kimi Räikkönen was behind the wheel.

Since then, while all-stars like Shane van Gisbergen and Helio Castroneves have driven the car, a Formula One driver has not sat behind the wheel since Räikkönen at COTA in 2023.

This time, a recent post to social media from a well-known NASCAR rumor mill account suggests that fans could be getting their wish.

The post (which was more of a game of Jeopardy than a direct claim) hinted that the driver was international, “from a small country,” a second-generation driver, and scored a podium in their F1 debut.

Of course, fans quickly connected the dots to former HAAS F1 driver Kevin Magnussen, the son of Jan Magnussen, who currently competes in endurance racing.

Still, neither the team nor Magnussen has yet to confirm such an arrangement, so, at least for now, this is just a rumor.
