What’s Happening?

Four-time IndyCar Series Champion and three-time Indianapolis 500 Champion Dario Franchitti is making his return to NASCAR for the Truck Series inaugural race at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

Franchitti will race with TRICON Garage, driving their No. 1 truck with support from Legacy Motor Club, owned by his long-time friend, Seven-Time NASCAR Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johnson, in what is, as of press time, scheduled to be a one-off start.

This event will mark the 52-year-old’s first NASCAR race since 2007, and first professional race on American soil since 2013.

The Scottsman made his name racing in CART, then IndyCar, where, driving with Team Green, Andretti Green Racing, and Chip Ganassi Racing, he won 31 American open wheel races and four series championships before a career-ending crash at the second race of the 2013 Grand Prix of Houston.

Since those injuries, Franchitti has made one professional start, racing in this year’s Michelin Dubai 24 Hour in a Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo.

This race will not only serve as his return to American racing but to NASCAR, as during his reign of dominance in IndyCar, Franchitti made the jump to stock cars in 2008 with Ganassi.

This started as one Craftsman Truck and five Busch Series starts in 2007, and turned into a 14-race Busch Series schedule, and 10 10-race Cup Series schedule in 2008. Ultimately, Franchitti never took to the sport, finishing no better than 22nd in Cup, fifth in Busch, and 33rd in his lone Truck Series race.

Fortunately, the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg is familiar territory for the former standout, scoring a 9.4 average finish and one win in eight starts at the street circuit in his IndyCar career.
