What’s Happening?

NASCAR Hall of Famer and 1960 Cup Series Champion Rex White has passed away at the age of 95.

Rex White is an original of NASCAR’s golden era. From 1956 to 1964, he entered 233 races in several car numbers (mostly his No. 4), racing against future champions, legends, and Hall of Famers.

In total, White scored 28 career wins, tied for 32nd all-time with fellow Hall of Famer Carl Edwards. While he won at 13 different tracks, White excelled at two: Bowman Gray Stadium, where he won six times, and Asheville–Weaverville Speedway, where he won five times.

His achievements on race day resulted in White winning the 1960 NASCAR Cup Series Championship over Richard Petty by a massive 3,936 points. That year, he scored six wins and 35 top tens in the season’s 40 races, also bringing home the most popular driver award.

In Rex’s passing, the legend has earned respect from both industry members and fans. In a release from NASCAR, Chairman and CEO Jim France reflected on the NASCAR legend:

“Rex epitomized the formative days of NASCAR—a true pioneer whose contributions helped shape the foundation of our sport. His hard work, dedication and talent allowed him to make a living doing what he loved most – racing cars. He was the model of consistency – finishing in the top five in nearly half of his races – and dominated the short tracks.” — Jim France

After retiring from Cup Series racing in 1964, White was not forgotten by the sport he helped shape. He was a member of the 1998 50 Greatest Drivers list and 2023’s 75 Greatest Drivers list. By far the crowning achievement of his time and legacy in racing was his induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame’s sixth class in 2016.
