What’s Happening?
While the NASCAR Xfinity Series gets the week off, the NASCAR Craftsman Truck and Cup Series head to Michigan International Speedway for a doubleheader weekend of racing action at the unique 2-mile track.
- Michigan International Speedway opened in 1968 and has hosted many motorsports throughout the years, including all three NASCAR national series. This year, the track helps lead off the NASCAR summer stretch rather than end it, as this year’s race is the 15th of the season, while last year’s was the 24th.
- The NASCAR Cup Series has hosted an event in Michigan every year since 1969. Interestingly enough, this will be the first time since 2020, and prior to then 1991, that Michigan will not have an Xfinity series date as the truck series returns for the first time since 2020.
- During its lifetime, Michigan International Speedway has had several ‘sister tracks’ such as Auto Club Speedway and Texas World Speedway; Michigan is the only 2-mile superspeedway of its kind remaining on the NASCAR schedule.

Top Storylines of the Weekend
- This is the first time that Michigan International Speedway will host the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series since the 2020 season. That race was one by Zane Smith. However, the Truck Series races at Michigan, all 21 of which, have a history of big-name winners taking home the trophy. This list includes Bubba Wallace, Kyle Bush, Kevin Harvick, Aric Almirola, and Greg Biffle. However, that doesn’t mean that Truck Series regulars don’t have a chance to win, as names like Brett Moffitt, Johnny Sauter, and James Buescher have all won at the track.
- This race is the first seating race as part of NASCAR‘s new in-season tournament. This tournament dubbed the In-Season Challenge, will pit each driver one-on-one during five races in TNT‘s portion of the schedule. The final race will be at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with two drivers facing off during the Brickyard 400 for $1 million. Over the next three races, all of which will air on Prime Video, finishing spots of the current top 32 drivers will be collected to decide seating for this tournament set to kick off on June 28 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
