At the Ford Performance’s 2025 Season Launch, the brand introduced the racing world to a fully bodied prototype of a NASCAR-style Ford Mustang Mach E. This follows NASCAR’s introduction of their unbranded EV Prototype last July.
NASCAR veteran David Ragan was alongside the newly unveiled NASCAR Mach E Demonstrator at the 2025 Season Launch. Ragan served as the test driver for NASCAR’s EV Prototype throughout its development. Alongside Ragan’s ties to the NASCAR EV, he also has deep ties to Ford. Of his 477 NASCAR Cup Series starts, 406 of those came in a Ford.
This is the first time race fans have seen a NASCAR-style EV prototype with a manufacturer specific body. NASCAR’s initial prototype—revealed in 2024—was built in collaboration with the sport’s three current OEMs: Chevrolet, Ford, and Toyota. That prototype, which made it’s national debut at Chicago last July, had no OEM branding.
During the reveal, Ford clarified that this car is a demonstrator. They will utilize it to test the equipment rather than as a replacement for their V8 Stock Cars. “We know we’re not racing there [NASCAR] full electric, of course,” said Mark Rushbrook, Global Director of Ford Performance. We love our V8 engines in NASCAR, but we want to go experiment.”
NASCAR developed its EV prototype with help from ABB; the car was a major part of NASCAR’s announced goal of reducing its carbon footprint to zero by 2035. According to NASCAR’s initial press release on the EV in July 2024, “Anchored by a 78-kWh liquid-cooled battery, the tunable powertrain can produce 1,000 kW at peak power.”
This “crossover” body style EV is not set to replace any of the current NASCAR series. In fact, at press time, NASCAR has yet to announce a sanctioned series for the car or a non-NASCAR Series that would field the EVs.
