What’s Happening?

After nearly a month and a half, the National Motorsports Appeals Panel upheld NASCAR’s Nov. 5 penalty handed to NASCAR Truck Series Champion Ty Majeski. This fine, totaling $12,500, stemmed from Majeski missing a required media availability while he was voting in person in Wisconsin.

  • NASCAR fined Majeski $12,500 for missing Championship Four production day. Ty was voting in person in Wisconsin, his home state and election swing state, during the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election.
  • During a media availability later that week, Majeski said he prefers to vote in person. The veteran driver stated, “There’s been a lot of stuff going on over the course of the last couple of elections.”
  • Most expected Majeski to appeal this decision as he claimed he did not expect the fine to be what it was. For example, that same week, Chandler Smith received a fine of just $10,000 for slapping Cole Custer after the Xfinity Series cut-off race at Martinsville.
  • While drivers do miss media availability, Majeski missed one for NASCAR Championship Weekend. NASCAR media, such as NBC, uses Championship Four production day to interview drivers eligible for the championship entering Phoenix.
  • Majeski, ironically, went on to win this year’s NASCAR Truck Series Championship, assuring he would have the money to pay off this fine if it stuck. Today, the NMPA agreed with and upheld NASCAR’s penalty. “Driver failed to meet a contractual agreement with NASCAR,” said the NMPA in a release. “One of the most, if not most, important media obligations of the entire season.”
  • Following the NMPA’s decision, Majeski has one more chance to appeal this decision to the National Motorsports Final Appeals Officer. The last time a penalty was appealed to the Final Appeals Officer was in August. This appeal centered on Austin Dillon’s massive penalty for wrecking Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin at Richmond. The NMPA Final Appeals Officer Bill Mullis ruled that Dillon’s penalty was justified and upheld it.
