What’s Happening?

Wednesday, former NASCAR Cup Series Champion Kurt Busch pleaded guilty to a DWI charge. He was initially charged with this in August when Iredell County Sheriffs accused him of driving drunk.

  • County Sheriffs arrested and charged Busch with this DWI on Aug. 19. Testing showed his alleged blood-alcohol concentration was 0.17, more than two times over the legal limit of .08 in North Carolina.
  • The elder Busch brother officially retired from NASCAR last season after suffering a terrible qualifying crash at Pocono in 2022. Since then, he has taken on a prominent advisory role at his former team, 23XI Racing, which is co-owned by Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan.
  • According to TMZ, who initially contacted Iredell County officials, Busch is required to perform 24 hours of community service, received a 60-day suspended sentence, was placed on probation, and will surrender his driver’s license for the alleged incident. With the guilty plea, the court will drop two other alleged charges from that August night.
  • Busch is not expected to return to racing, as his retirement is due to injury rather than choice. However, rumors have circulated in the past year that he could return at some point. While these are unfounded, how this alleged incident affects his standing in NASCAR is unknown.
