What’s Happening?
On Monday, NASCAR hosted a test of Goodyear’s wet-weather tire at Homestead Miami Speedway. While this testing is newsworthy in its own right, in a Tuesday morning post-test interview on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, a NASCAR official may have prematurely announced Ryan Preece’s 2025 plans. So, how did this happen?
What We Know
- For some time now, Ryan Preece, the final reaming Stewart-Haas Racing Cup Series driver on the market, has been tied to rumors of an RFK Racing expansion. This rumor is more of an inside joke at this point, as most widely expect that he will join RFK.
- This leads us to Monday’s test at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Preece was originally said to be testing the No. 6 for RFK Racing, further stretching this all-but-confirmed rumor. However, on Tuesday afternoon on SiriusXM Channel 90, NASCAR Cup Series Managing Director Brad Moran may have let this news slip. “Preece was in the 60 car, which is his drive for next year,” Moran said.
- This long-term rumor, seemingly confirmed by Moran, originated from a mid-August story that major sponsor Kroger might head to RFK Racing in 2025. With this addition, RFK would expand to three full-time chartered cars. However, there is no clue as to where they will get this third charter. Some insiders suggest RFK associate Rick Ware Racing could lease one of their two charters.
- Looking at his statistics, you may wonder why RFK wants Ryan Preece in a fully funded car. Most in the industry say that RFK believes Preece has yet to get a quality shot at the Cup Series. His first tenure with JTG Daugherty Racing was a disappointment in mid-tier equipment. Furthermore, SHR’s downfall began around the time Preece came to the team.
- There will be more news to this story as time goes on. As of Tuesday afternoon, RFK has not confirmed Preece’s signing. Most insiders expect the announcement to come with the official announcement of the Kroger deal. Perhaps we will know about the charter around that time as well.
