Storyline – Recommended air pressures in focus at Kansas: Kansas Speedway, being an intermediate track, means that NASCAR Cup teams will be looking to gain grip and speed to maximize performance. Along with the car’s geometry settings, adjusting air pressures in their tires is another way teams accomplish that goal. Goodyear works with teams each race to provide data to highlight the balance between grip and durability. Tires with lower air pressures over-deflect more, causing damage to the sidewall that can result in air loss. With the balance of this Next Gen car being more to the rear than that of the previous generation car, the right-rear corner will be the primary focus this weekend.
“Cup teams will try to maximize speed at Kansas by gaining grip, and one of the tuning tools they use is air pressure,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear’s director of racing. “Each week we work with teams and provide them data that demonstrates why running our minimum recommended pressures is important in the ‘risk versus reward” balance of racing on these intermediate tracks.”
Notes – No tire changes for Cup teams at Kansas: Being on 18-inch bead diameter tires, NASCAR Cup teams will run a different tire set-up than those in the Xfinity and Craftsman Truck Series at Kansas this weekend . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires that these teams ran at Kansas in May . . . Cup teams have also run this same tire set-up at Las Vegas, Texas, Nashville and Pocono this season . . . with this 18-inch tire, and its lower profile sidewall, Cup cars do not run inner liners in any of their tires.
