In late June, a report that Days of Thunder 2 was in development blew up on NASCAR social media. However, since that report, nothing else has come out about the movie. What update is there, if any at all? As of February 13, 2024, we have just one update – direct from NASCAR.

• Fans are hoping to see a Days of Thunder sequel. If it were to happen, NASCAR fans and industry members would flock to theaters to see the movie.

2/13 UPDATE: NASCAR Would “Love to See” New Days of Thunder Movie

Adam Stern of Sports Business Journal caught up with NASCAR COO Steve O’Donnell, and O’Donnell expressed interest in the potential new movie. He cited NASCAR trying to expand its brand into new territories as a reason for this interest.

We’d love to see that. The more places we can expose NASCAR to with a broader audience, the better. With Netflix, when they’re advertising us in the middle of Times Square right now [for the ‘Full Speed’ docuseries] — that’s huge, and it shows what a great partner they already have been. So anytime you can expose the sport outside of a regular race weekend broadcast is big for us.

NASCAR helped out quite a bit with the original Days of Thunder Movie, going so far as to allow two non-scored cars equipped with movie cameras to speed around the track during the early stages of the 1990 Daytona 500.

What’s the Update?

Well, there is a whole lot of nothing to report about the next Days of Thunder movie. The movie is not featured as in development on any movie websites. It seems the only report out that the movie is in development came from Martin.

While there is nothing to report on that specific development, Days of Thunder has been in the news in recent years. Kim Masters of The Hollywood Reporter reported in 2022 that Paramount and Cruise had brief discussions about a Days of Thunder television series. That idea never got off the ground.

It seems that Days of Thunder getting a sequel or a TV series has been discussed by important parties. However, for some reason, it has never gotten off the ground.

What’s the Possibility?

There are two possibilities about this report now that it is almost 6 months old. First, it’s possible the movie was never in development to begin with. Secondly, it’s possible the movie was in the very early stages of development, and they are taking time on other projects before getting to Days of Thunder.

It’s impossible to know for sure. However, based on no other corroborating reports about the movie, it’s very possible this was just an untrue rumor. Then again, we do not know for sure.

Will Days of Thunder 2 ever come out? Will there be a TV series sometime in the future? Time will tell.
