Bloomberg reports that Warner Bros. Discovery has joined Amazon as candidates to broadcast NASCAR on streaming beginning in 2025.

What’s Happening?

According to Gerry Smith and Lucas Shaw of Bloomberg, it is between Amazon and Warner Bros. Discovery is to broadcast a 6-8 race package of NASCAR races beginning in 2024. Amazon was already considered a Player for NASCAR’s newest media rights deal, but Warner Bros. is a new face that had not previously been mentioned. Smith and Shaw also reported that Fox and NBC are “In a position” to re-up for 2025 and beyond.

You Need to Know:

  • With NASCAR’s media rights deal coming to a close in 2024, it has been widely reported that at least a few races would be exclusively moved to a streamer. This report confirms that, and it also confirms that it would be a 6-8 race package. That is similar to the TNT NASCAR Summer Series between 2007 and 2014, which broadcasted six races on TNT between the Fox and ESPN packages.
  • Warner Brothers Discovery is completely new to the discussion, but their NASCAR connection is deeper than many may think. They were behind the scenes of NASCAR broadcasting for many years, and they actually have a hand in the Xfinity Series TV deal.
  • Fan reaction is a bit mixed to this news. Some fans only want Amazon, while others are excited to see Warner Bros. entering the fray.

Warner Brothers’ NASCAR Connection

Warner Brothers Discovery is related to two entities that either were or will be involved in NASCAR. First is Turner Broadcasting, which Warner Bros. Discovery is the parent company of

Turner Broadcasting owns TV stations such as TBS and TNT. Both stations used to broadcast NASCAR with TBS broadcasting NASCAR on the superstation between 1983 and 2000, and TNT had it between 2001 and 2014. Warner Bros. bought Turner Broadcasting in 1996, so from 1996 until 2014, a Warner Bros. entity broadcasted NASCAR races.

As for a more modern connection, Warner Bros. owns DC Comics, and the streaming rights for DC Comics are currently held by The CW. As we know, The CW is going to be the exclusive broadcaster of NASCAR Xfinity Series races beginning in 2025.

For years, Warner Bros. was involved in the shadows of NASCAR broadcasting, even if they were not out front about it. Now with The CW connection, NASCAR and Warner Bros. seem they are getting closer to talking to each other.

In the Stands

DIRT is only focused on the presence of Amazon.

GuhleW is begging for Amazon Prime

Brian does not want Amazon Prime in the discussion.

Alex wants to see the TNT Summer Series return

John Freeman wants to see Warner Bros. bring TNT back.

It seems that two favorites have emerged, and one is expected with one unexpected. It will be interesting to see where NASCAR goes for this streaming package they are looking to nail down.
