It’s going to be a while before we can definitively say that NASCAR on the Streets of Chicago was a success or not. However, a few things can be taken away from the immediate fallout.
From purely the on-track racing perspective, NASCAR’s Street Race in Chicago seemed to be a runaway success. Steve O’Donnell said after the race, “We can take the Cup Series anywhere we want. The race we put on today would sell and be embraced globally.” Well, where do the fans believe NASCAR can sell the show they put on in Chicago over the weekend?
The NASCAR Xfinity Series race was unprecedented for many reasons, but in no way bigger than how the race ended. After lightning postponed the race on Saturday, NASCAR tried to complete the Xfinity race on Sunday, but rain drenched the track. Before the race was considered “official”, NASCAR ended the Xfinity Series race after only 25 laps due to what they called “Several unprecedented circumstances”.
