What’s Happening?

Legacy Motor Club’s third NASCAR Cup Series car for the 2027 season might be the biggest storyline of NASCAR Silly Season, with Fans, drivers, and everyone in between all asking the same question: Who will drive this car?

In 2025, Jimmie Johnson’s NASCAR Cup Series team, Legacy Motor Club, sued Rick Ware Racing after a deal to purchase a NASCAR Charter fell through.

After a few months, the lawsuit resolved itself, with LMC and RWR settling out of court, with RWR selling the team a charter currently leased to RFK Racing for the No. 60 team.

Earlier this season, Jimmie Johnson confirmed the worst-kept secret in NASCAR, that LMC would expand to three full-time cars next season.

For the most part, the team has kept quiet about who will drive this car, though some rumors have circulated and fans have their own bets on who gets the nod.

Still, the team has yet to announce any plans about who will be their new driver.

Thursday, the official press conference schedule for this weekend’s race at Talladega Superspeedway featured a “Legacy Motor Club announcement” at 11 AM CT.

While this is not confirmed to be the announcement of a new driver, it got fans talking about whether or not Legacy will finally answer the 2027 Silly Season question everybody is asking.

But if you missed out on the rumors about the new car so far, let’s review all the rumored options for LMC’s new car ahead of this weekend’s announcement.

Jesse Love

One of the first rumored options for LMC came during their lawsuit with RWR in 2025, with fingers pointing to Richard Childress Racing’s top prospect Jesse Love as a potential candidate.

In June, Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports claimed in a report that if LMC scored that third charter for 2026, they could go after Love, saying, “If they add a third car, Xfinity driver Jesse Love’s previous connection to Toyota could help him.”

These rumors continued into this year, and it’s easy to see why, given the state of RCR in the Cup Series. Still, Love, nor RCR, have announced any plans for a promotion or that Love is leaving the team.

This pairing feels like a toss-up, as RCR and LMC have both had their struggles, but, since these rumors first surfaced, Love is now a Champion, something that could have influenced RCR to protect him more.

Riley Herbst

Riley Herbst is in an odd spot at 23XI Racing, as, despite strides towards improvement over his rookie year, prospect Corey Heim is breathing down his neck with continued success as a now part-time driver in the Craftsman Truck and Cup Series.

In the same rumor earlier this season that suggested LMC still had interest in Love, the poster claimed that they had heard Herbst could be an option given that 23XI moves on from the 27-year-old.

If he went to LMC, it could be similar to his role at 23XI, a well-sponsored and experienced driver who can help get the new team going. In a world where Herbst further improves, he could be a long-term option.

Nonetheless, this all depends on what 23XI does with their silly season, as their 2027 lineup is still in the air.

Harrison Burton

The latest name to join the list of rumored prospective drivers for the third LMC car is Harrison Burton. These rumors circled online earlier this season, but have increased as the season continued.

Burton is a Cup Series winner and returned to Toyota in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series with Sam Hunt Racing this season. But, perhaps most important of all, an episode of NASCAR’s Hauler Talk podcast after the race at COTA confirmed that Burton is LMC’s reserve driver, establishing a real connection.

In fact, Johnson even stoked these flames with a recent Instagram post showing him and Burton walking together down pit road.

Is There a Fourth Option?

While these are the named rumor mill options for the team, fans have their own theories about who would be best for LMC.

These include the aforementioned Corey Heim, who, granted, does not seem to have a set plan for 2026 (yet), though most hope that he is called up to full-time action with 23XI Racing.

Other names often mentioned by fans include NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series winners Taylor Gray and Sam Mayer, though these are mostly just names speculated in online circles.
