Which Track Would Chicagoland Replace on the 2026 NASCAR Schedule?

What’s Happening?

NASCAR fans have been vying for the return of Chicagoland Speedway to the NASCAR calendar. If NASCAR were to add the track to the schedule, one track would have to lose a date. But what track could be on the chopping block if NASCAR heads back to Joliet?

Why Chicagoland?

Though the track joined the NASCAR schedule in 2001, after years of below-average racing and attendance, Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois, found itself off the NASCAR schedule after the 2019 season.

Yet, with the recent revival of intermediate-style racing in NASCAR, fans have pinned the 1.5-mile venue as a must-add to the NASCAR schedule, begging the sports officials to give the facility a second chance. One driver, Carson Hocevar, has recently added fuel to this fire, posting photos of the seemingly ready-to-race track on his Instagram Story while flying over Joliet.

Only adding to fan speculation, during a recent livestream, Hocevar hinted that he’s heard the track is going to be on the 2026 NASCAR schedule, with the 22-year-old saying, “I’m gonna be so pumped for Chicagoland next year.” While this could be wishful thinking on the part of Hocevar, this is not the first time he’s teased a track’s return on stream. Last year, he hinted that Rockingham was back in 2025, something that turned out to be true (at least for the Truck and Xfinity Series).

While we don’t know what Track NASCAR could remove from the schedule if it were to return to Chicagoland, there are some suspected candidates and rumors that could fill in the blanks.

Iowa Speedway

Iowa Speedway finally found its way onto the NASCAR schedule as a stopgap in 2024 after the demolition of Auto Club Speedway in 2023. When NASCAR announced the addition of the track, most suspected that it was temporary, as NASCAR has stressed the importance of returning to Southern California.

When rumors of adding a track, be that Rockingham or Chicagoland, fans often suggest Iowa as the track to lose its date. But, since its addition, race fans in the Hawkeye State have shown selling out the track in both 2024 and 2025. While it may be a quick and logical solution, NASCAR leaving Iowa Speedway would be a foolish decision.

Darlington Raceway (Spring)

Another race track that fans look at in the same light as Iowa is Darlington Raceway. The track, which re-gained multiple race dates in 2020 (due to the COVID-19 Pandemic), currently has two race weekends, and with the flooded market of tracks on the NASCAR schedule in the Carolinas, fans view Darlington, despite solid Next Gen racing, as a track that could lose a date.

If NASCAR were to do this, it would likely be the track’s spring race date, maintaining the Southern 500’s semi-traditional weekend. However, the track has solid attendance and a good rapport with fans, hosting NASCAR’s throwback weekend in the spring and a crown jewel in the fall. At this point, if NASCAR hasn’t already taken a race from Darlington, don’t count on it happening now.

Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez

Mexico City’s Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez is the newest addition to NASCAR’s calendar. But, despite a fun weekend south of the border, there is currently no promise that the sport will return to the track next year. While there was unmatched excitement, the race wasn’t a sell-out and a long haul for NASCAR’s teams.

Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez earned its race date from Richmond Raceway in Virginia. While NASCAR would probably not give this date back to Richmond, the sport is open about its pursuit of races in other countries, and this date could go to a race in Canada, if not Mexico City.

Chicago Street Circuit

The final race on NASCAR’s Chicago Street Circuit could be this season. Reports have stated that the feeling in the garage area is that it’s time to end the event, and even Chicago Street Circuit President Julie Giese has stated that their focus is “on this year’s event.”

For some time now, the rumor was that, at the conclusion of its NASCAR contract, NASCAR would move its street race to San Diego. However, a report from Jordan Bianchi of The Athletic in April claimed that NASCAR could need a one-year stopgap track before moving to San Diego.

Though the track is not exactly in Chicago, returning to the NASCAR-owned venue could be an easy option should NASCAR have to hold off on street racing in 2026.
