What’s Happening?
With the regular season entering a decisive point, only a handful of drivers have already done enough to remove any real uncertainty about making NASCAR’s Chase.
Their paths have differed, with some relying on outright dominance and race wins, while others have built their seasons on week-to-week consistency.
Across the NASCAR Cup Series, O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, and Craftsman Truck Series, six drivers have established themselves as benchmarks for the rest of the field.
NASCAR Cup Series
Denny Hamlin
Denny Hamlin continues to sit atop the NASCAR Cup Series standings with 791 points. While his own team’s driver, Tyler Reddick, has won more races, Hamlin has put together arguably one of the most complete seasons in recent memory.
Through 20 races, the Joe Gibbs Racing veteran has collected four race wins at Las Vegas, Nashville, Michigan, and Pocono, along with ten top-five finishes, 12 top-tens, and, most impressive of all, zero DNFs. That reliability has allowed him to score points virtually every weekend, regardless of whether he reached Victory Lane.
Hamlin has also been the series’ most dominant driver at controlling races. His 854 laps led are comfortably the highest among all full-time competitors, showing just how often the No. 11 Toyota has been the fastest car on track.
Combined with 151 stage points, Hamlin has consistently maximized every race weekend, which explains why he remains the championship leader despite having one fewer victory than Reddick.
His focus will now shift to defending the regular-season championship lead and accumulating valuable points before the postseason begins.
Tyler Reddick
Although Tyler Reddick trails Hamlin by 24 points, not many drivers have displayed more winning ability this season. The 23XI Racing star leads the Cup Series with five wins, three in a row to open the season at Daytona, Atlanta, and COTA, followed by wins at Darlington and Kansas.
He has accumulated ten top-five finishes, a series-best 13 top-ten finishes, and 151 stage points, matching Hamlin in that category. His lone DNF has ultimately been the biggest factor preventing him from leading the standings despite having the most wins.
Even after Ryan Blaney’s dominant win at EchoPark Speedway reduced the gap to third place, Reddick still enjoys a comfortable advantage over the rest of the championship contenders.
With five wins already secured and one of the strongest statistical seasons in the field, his Chase position has been assumed to be locked in for weeks.
The remaining regular-season races are now about chasing Hamlin for the regular-season crown.
NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series
Justin Allgaier
No driver across NASCAR’s three national series has controlled his series’ championship quite like Justin Allgaier.
The JR Motorsports veteran leads the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series standings with 966 points, holding a commanding 240-point advantage over second place after just 21 races.
Allgaier has already won six races at Phoenix, Darlington, Martinsville, Nashville, Pocono, and EchoPark Speedway, more than anyone else in the series, while recording 13 top-five finishes, 16 top-tens, and 472 laps led.
Although two DNFs sit on his record, they have not impacted his chances or slowed his momentum because he consistently finishes near the front or outright wins races.
His enormous points advantage means Chase qualification is no longer a discussion. Allgaier enters the final stretch of the regular season as the overwhelming regular-season and full-season championship favorite.
Jesse Love
Jesse Love’s season is built very differently, but it was equally effective when it comes to securing a Chase berth. Sitting second in the standings with 726 points, Love has achieved that position without winning a single race.
Instead, consistency has been his greatest strength.
Love has recorded seven top-five finishes, 13 top-tens, and accumulated 179 stage points, taking full advantage of this season’s new Chase format and holding strong finishes every weekend that were as valuable as collecting trophies.
While the lack of victories has prevented him from challenging Allgaier for the championship lead, his ability to repeatedly score solid points has created a huge cushion over the drivers behind him.
NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series
Layne Riggs
Layne Riggs has emerged as the driver everyone is chasing in the Craftsman Truck Series.
Leading the standings with 595 points, Riggs has mixed race wins with consistency to establish himself as one of the championship favorites.
His season includes four wins at St. Petersburg, Charlotte, Nashville, and San Diego, seven top-five finishes, eight top-ten finishes, and zero DNFs.
That clean record has allowed him to build a 44-point championship lead over Kaden Honeycutt and to lead 269 laps, the most among the top championship contenders.
Kaden Honeycutt
Although Kaden Honeycutt has only one win this season so far at Watkins Glen, his consistency has made him one of the strongest championship contenders in the Truck Series and has already qualified him for the Chase.
Sitting second in the standings with 551 points, Honeycutt trails Riggs by just 44 points, keeping the regular-season title battle alive.
He leads the top contenders with nine top-five finishes and ten top-ten finishes. His 149 stage points further underline how consistently competitive the No. 11 Toyota has been throughout the season.
Two DNFs have slightly limited his championship challenge, but they have not jeopardized his Chase hopes.
Owing to his steady stream of strong finishes and points-paying performances, Honeycutt has comfortably locked himself into the Chase and remains one of the biggest threats to Riggs once the postseason begins.
