What’s Happening?
It is once again elimination time in the NASCAR Playoffs. This weekend, all three of the NASCAR National Series head to Martinsville, VA, for the final race of the Round of Eight. Poor weather has yet to affect the NASCAR Playoffs. Will that change this weekend?
- Martinsville Speedway, also known as the paperclip, is a NASCAR original. The half-mile short track is known for banging fenders and “hurt feelings.” Since its opening, NASCAR’s most iconic faces have used a win at Martinsville to propel them to greatness.
- The NASCAR Cup Series first raced at Martinsville in 1949. The series has returned twice yearly since then.
- The NASCAR Xfinity Series first raced at Martinsville in 1982. However, after the 1994 season, the series did not return until 2006 and then 2020.
- The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series first raced at Martinsville in 1995 as part of the series’ initial season. From 2003 to 2019, the series raced twice yearly until returning to racing twice a year this season.

Martinsville Speedway Weather History
Martinsville, despite its location, has a relatively tame weather history over the past few seasons. One notable weather-affected race was not in the NASCAR Cup Series but in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series last season. This race saw the official debut of NASCAR’s rain tire on an oval. That tire, now in the Cup Series as well, will be available this weekend if the weather takes a turn. Furthermore, while the lights will surely be used this weekend after sunset, the track does have lights if need be.
