What’s Happening?

NASCAR’s National Series heads to Bristol, Tennesse, for the second race of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Playoffs, the NASCAR Xfinity Series Regular Season Finale, and the NASCAR Cup Series Round of 16 cutoff race. However, will this packed weekend of racing also be filled with poor weather?

  • Bristol Motor Speedway is one of NASCAR’s classic venues. The .533-mile, high-banked oval in Bristol, TN, produces close-quarter, high-speed short-track racing. The Bristol Night Race is also one of NASCAR’s most iconic races.
  • The NASCAR Cup Series first raced at Bristol Motor Speedway in 1961. Since 1961, the Cup Series has raced at Bristol twice yearly. Denny Hamlin won the 2024 spring race this March.
  • The NASCAR Xfinity Series first raced at Bristol in 1982. The Series raced at Bristol twice yearly from 1985 to 2021
  • The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series first raced at Bristol in 1995. After an absence from 2000 to 2002, the Series returned to once yearly from 2003 to 2023. However, 2024 is the first year the Trucks will race twice on the concrete at BMS, with Christian Eckes winning the spring race.

Bristol Weather History

Of the last 21 Cup Series races at Bristol, weather postponed four, weather delayed five, and seven saw some amount of weather. The 2018 Cup Series spring race saw a significant rain delay, with the heavy rains pushing the race back a day. Fortunately, the Night Race has not had too bad of a resume with rain.

The race this spring did not see a rain delay. However, the cool conditions led to the tire fall off, which made for an interesting race. In the event of bad weather, the NASCAR wet weather package could come into play this weekend.
