What’s Happening?

It’s the final race weekend of the NASCAR season, and the series is on a hot streak of non-weather-affected races. With one weekend to go, will NASCAR be able to avoid a delay one more time?

  • Phoenix Raceway is a 1-mile flat short track in Avondale, Arizona. It is the host of two race weekends a year, including the series finale championship weekend every year. While some thought the track was at risk of losing the finale, NASCAR has confirmed its return for 2025.
  • The NASCAR Cup Series first raced at Phoenix Raceway in 1988; Alan Kulwicki won that race, the first of the future champions’ career. NASCAR added a second Cup Series race at Phoenix in 2004 before shifting all three National Series Championship races to the track in 2020.
  • The NASCAR Xfinity Series first raced at Phoenix Raceway in 1999. NASCAR added a second Xfinity Series race at Phoenix in 2005, something that has remained the same since then.
  • The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series first raced at Phoenix Raceway in 1995. It was the first of the then-NASCAR SuperTruck Series, which would see the Truck Series race twice a year until 1998. The Series has not raced twice a year at Phoenix since.

Phoenix Raceway Weather History

NASCAR has had a lot of luck with the weather in Phoenix since moving the NASCAR Cup Series Championship there from the stormy Florida coast in 2020. The last fall race in Phoenix to see substantial rain was in 2015. That race, the Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500, was Dale Earnhart Jr’s final NASCAR Cup Series win, with a downpour ending the race 93 laps early. If NASCAR loses its good luck and good luck streak at Phoenix this weekend, the wet weather package is available. However, with the implications of championship weekend, it will be interesting to see if NASCAR would opt for this.
