What’s Happening?
NASCAR returns to Atlanta this weekend. The NASCAR Cup Series Playoff kicks off Sunday with a chance for an underdog upset. On the Xfinity Series side, drivers have three races left to lock themselves in. There is a lot of riding this weekend, but will the weather affect even the best-laid-out plans?
- Atlanta Motor Speedway opened in 1960. It was once a normal oval, but it is now a dangerous, high-banked drafting track.
- The NASCAR Cup Series has raced at Atlanta Motor Speedway since 1960. The Cup Series races at Atlanta twice a year, a tradition they began again in 2021 after a ten-season hiatus.
- The NASCAR Xfinity Series is racing in Atlanta for the second time this season as well. The Xfinity Series has only raced at Atlanta twice a year since 2021.

Atlanta Weather History
Since converting to a high-speed pack racing track in 2022, Atlanta Motor Speedway has been lucky with the weather. A long streak that ended in 2023 when the Summer race, held on a different weekend than this year, was rained out with 75 laps to go. Rain delays have also affected Atlanta, with 2015 and 2018’s spring races facing delays.
