On Jan. 12, the Eastern Motorsport Press Association hosted its 52nd Annual Convention. As part of the convention, the EMPA also announced Hall of Fame inductees and award winners.

The awards range from writing and photography contests to driver awards such as National Asphalt Driver of the Year, won by Kyle Larson, and annual journalist awards.

One of the highest honors awarded to journalists by the EMPA is the Jim Hunter Writer of the Year. This year, veteran motorsports writer Keith Waltz tied Ted Schmidt for Writer of the Year honors.

Waltz has been a NASCAR journalist for 30 years and has covered some of the sport’s most important races, changes, and individual moments. Some of his most notable work has come with the legendary National Speed Sport News.

In addition to his work as a Journalist, Waltz worked in Public Relations in the sport at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the early 2000s. In winning this award, Waltz joins a long list of winners dating back to 1971. Waltz is also the current Copy Editor of the officially licensed NASCAR magazine NASCAR Pole Position.
