What’s Happening?
After Grant Enfinger snapped a 40-race winless drought last week at the twist and turns of the Lime Rock Road Course, the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series returned to its roots today to take on the recently renovated North Wilkesboro Speedway for some old-fashioned, mid-day short track racing. The earlier portions of the race were dominated by Carson Hocevar and points leader Layne Riggs. Of course, that was before a tire issue at the end of Stage 2 riddled Hocevar to limping around the track, costing him two laps and his chance to win.
Meanwhile, Riggs experienced some issues in the closing laps of Stage 2, radioing his crew that he needed extreme changes made to his 34 truck if he wanted to be in contention to win. Those changes were made and Riggs found himself in the 2nd position late. But taking advantage of the misfortunes of the two leaders was the quiet third place runner, Chandler Smith, who took the race lead to begin the final stage. As the field took the Craftsman 20 to go, Smith continued to lead over Riggs at 7.5 seconds. If Riggs wanted to be back in contention for the win, a caution would need to come out.
Unfortunately for his teammate, that caution never came. Chandler Smith went on to score his second win of the season after winning the season-opening Daytona race in a thriller 4-wide finish. This race was decidedly less thrilling as he scored the victory at over ten seconds over Layne Riggs. It marks Front Row Motorsports 6th win of the season and Smith’s 9th career Truck Series victory.

Race Report:
- Points leader Layne Riggs scored the pole for today’s race and started alongside Carson Hocevar in the Spire No. 77 truck. There were a number of Cup Series drivers or returning drivers in today’s race. They include Hocevar, Christopher Bell (No. 62), Corey Heim (No. 5), Chase Elliott (No. 7), Shane van Gisbergen (No. 71), and Ryan Newman (No. 25). This marked Newman’s first truck series race in eight years.
- In the opening stint of the race, Hocevar cleared Riggs for the race lead. Though Riggs routinely challenged Hocevar on the bottom, Hocevar continued to get strong runs on the outside, maintaining the race lead early.
- The first caution of the day came on Lap 14 when Donovan Strauss, making his NASCAR debut, spun after contact from behind by Corey Lajoie.
- The race restarted and Carson Hocevar continued to lead until Lap 51, when Layne Riggs cleared him for the lead. Riggs went on to win the opening stage of the race over Hocevar and his teammate Chandler Smith.
- The following drivers earned stage points in Stage 1 at North Wilkesboro: Layne Riggs (10), Chandler Smith (8), Kaden Honeycutt (4), Christian Eckes (3), Gio Ruggiero (2), and Grant Enfinger (1).
- As the race restarted, Riggs’ truck started to fade. He slipped to the lower half of the top 10 as Carson Hocevar resumed the race lead. The third caution of the day and second for incident came out on Lap 120 as Luke Baldwin went for a solo spin.
- During the caution, a number of the leaders came down pit road while other stayed out. Ty Majeski assumed the race lead and went on to win the second stage as Carson Hocevar has a flat tire, forcing him to go down a lap.
- These drivers earned stage points in Stage 2: Ty Majeski (10), Chandler Smith (9), Ben Rhodes (8), Christian Eckes (7), Stewart Friesen (6), Daniel Hemric (5), Andres Perez (4), and Gio Ruggiero (3).
