Connor Zilisch’s future has become one of NASCAR’s biggest talking points, despite the 20-year-old’s tumultuous rookie Cup Series campaign.
Last week, after Alex Bowman’s bombshell retirement announcement, in which the veteran is aiming to end his full-time career following the 2027 season, speculation has centered on who could inherit the iconic No. 48 Chevrolet at Hendrick Motorsports. And Zilisch’s name has consistently surfaced near the top of that list.
Amid the rumors and insider speculations, Trackhouse Racing owner Justin Marks isn’t pretending the interest doesn’t exist. The former racer-turned-owner knows his young driver is highly regarded across the garage. But as far as he’s concerned, conversations about 2028 can wait.

Reflecting on the growing speculation surrounding Zilisch’s long-term future, Marks made it clear that the driver’s current contract remains the only thing occupying Trackhouse’s attention.
“Connor (Zilisch) is contracted with us through 2027. I think beyond that, who knows what happens? The way that we approach those kinds of things is like, we have to do the best job that we can for the kid right now, right?”
Rather than getting caught up in rumors surrounding HMS, Marks emphasized that Trackhouse’s responsibility is to provide Zilisch with every tool necessary to succeed while he drives the No. 88 Chevrolet.
During a recent interview with Kevin Harvick on his show SPEED With Harvick & Buxton Marks stated, “While Connor is a Trackhouse driver and we’re putting that No. 88 car on the race track, the most important thing is to give him, you know, the best opportunity to succeed as possible, for Chevrolet, for Red Bull, for all of our sponsors, and for his future.”
The 45-year-old also admitted that Zilisch’s current results don’t reflect his true ability. While the rookie has shown flashes of elite speed, consistency has been harder to come by during his first full Cup campaign.
“Frankly, he’s a lot better than where he is running. And part of that is the learning curve, and part of that is us needing to just put him in a better situation, get him faster racecars, and do the things that he needs to do.”
On one side, the speculation surrounding Zilisch isn’t difficult to understand. Bowman has already confirmed he will leave HMS after the 2027 season, creating a rare opening at one of NASCAR’s premier organizations.
And Zilisch, a Chevrolet development driver, is regarded as one of the sport’s brightest young talents and has naturally emerged as a leading candidate. However, much like he said in an interview with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio earlier this week, Marks has little interest in laying out the play for the coming season.

“2028 is too far away, I think, for us to really spend a lot of bandwidth and like figuring that out,” Marks said.
Instead, he believes Trackhouse Racing’s success over the next season and a half will ultimately shape whatever comes next.
“I think if we do our job the way that Trackhouse needs to do and keep working on them, focusing on them, and have success with them, the future will be what the future is,” Marks said.
The objective is simple for him: to maximize the talent already sitting in the No. 88 car instead of worrying about hypothetical scenarios, even if those scenarios may have some weight to them.
“I think we can’t look that far ahead. We have to just make sure that we’re taking advantage of this incredible talent that we have sitting in the No. 88 car right now and try to get him up the grid and hopefully to victory lane.”
As things stand, the North Carolina native sits 34th in the Cup Series standings with just one top-ten finish through 21 races. Seven DNFs have significantly hampered his rookie campaign, making Mark’s commitment to prioritizing his development over long-term speculation all the more understandable.
