What’s Happening?

Tuesday, NASCAR suspended driver Daniel Dye following controversy created by comments made during an online live stream. Of course, as this is the most recent driver suspension in NASCAR, the community is sharing its thoughts on NASCAR’s decision to suspend Dye.

What Happened?

During a recent livestream of a NASCAR trading card unboxing, Dye, the host of the pack opening on livestream shopping platform Whatnot, began speaking about an interaction he shared with IndyCar driver David Malukas.

Dye, who said he did not know what series Malukas raced in, asked the Team Penske driver if his series raced on ovals. The NASCAR driver then shared a mocking version of Malukas’ response, eventually landing on what he went on to call “a David Malukas gay voice.”

Following backlash from not only his mocking of Malukas but also the tone he used towards the end of the short clip, NASCAR and Dye’s team, Kaulig Racing, suspended the young driver for an indefinite amount of time.

After the suspension, Dye released the following statement on Social Media.

What Rule Did Dye Violate?

Per NASCAR, Dye violated Section 4.3.C of the NASCAR Rule Book, which reads as follows:

“NASCAR Members shall not make or cause to be made a public statement or communication that criticizes, ridicules, or otherwise disparages another person based upon that person’s race, color, creed, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, religion, age, or handicapping condition.”

While his suspension from NASCAR is indefinite, the sport said in Wednesday’s penalty report that he will have to undergo sensitivity training.

What’s the Plan For Kaulig?

Even when NASCAR eventually drops Dye’s suspension, there is no telling when Kaulig will drop its suspension, as there is a chance that RAM will have a say in the matter.

Ram, who returned to NASCAR after over a decade away this past offseason, has not commented on the matter; however, a suspension of one of their full-time drivers just three races into the season is never a good look.

While Kaulig has commented on the matter and made plans for Cup Series driver A.J. Allmendinger to drive the No. 10 this weekend, they have yet to make long-term plans for a replacement or replacements for Dye.

How did the NASCAR Community React?

Comparisons to Malukas

While a large portion of the commentary on Dye’s suspension focuses on things such as professionalism, brand representation, and the meaning behind his comments, another portion of the fanbase is focused more on Dye’s on-track resume, as opposed to the actual video in question.

This is a fair comparison, as Malukas is often considered one of IndyCar’s rising stars, even being trusted with the iconic Team Penske No. 12 following the team’s split with veteran Will Power at the conclusion of last season.

In contrast, some fans are pointing out Dye’s status as a regular in NASCAR’s lower divisions.

User @RealBusterLex on X said, “A truck driver acting like he’s better than an Indycar driver Don’t suspend him… he’s just clearly very jealous of David Malukas.”

Those comments like these are to be expected in this scenario; some fans are using these to redirect the focus to what Dye said during his livestream.

Professionalism

For the most part, the online community seems pleased with NASCAR and Kaulig’s decision to suspend Dye, pointing towards things such as his support from Ram as a reason this was a bad judgment call on his part.

On X, user @thelittleowl11 said, “When you are representing a huge company like RAM, this isn’t a particularly smart thing to do from Daniel Dye.”

Veteran NASCAR reporter Jenna Fryer of AP Sports shared another business side opinion on the matter in a post as well, beyond just the controversial nature of his tone and comments, relating Dye’s comments to a lack of professionalism.

“When sponsors and a team pay you to represent them, and you are given a platform to earn a living while representing an entity, a team, brands, etc, there is an obligation to maintain decorum, professionalism, and basic common sense.” — Jenna Fryer via X

One point made by several users online is the irony of Dye’s actions, given the fact that Ram and Kaulig Racing’s TV Game Show, RAM: Race For the Seat, which decided one of the four full-time Ram drivers for 2026, featured a portion in which drivers were tested on their media readiness.

Nonetheless, this does not mean that Dye does not have supporters online, with many pointing to free speech and the joking nature of Dye’s comments as NASCAR going a step too far with a suspension.

In response to these, however, many fans are pointing out that the NASCAR Rule Book is an agreement between the drivers and the sport, one that Dye violated, even if he was joking.
