What’s Happening?

During a recent interview with Texas Motor Speedway, General Manager Mark Faber commented on a viral rumor that one Speedway Motorsports-owned racetrack is soon to get the “Atlanta Treatment.”

A rumor stemming from a post on X from early April stated that a track later confirmed not to be owned by NASCAR would soon be reconfigured and receive what they deemed the “Atlanta treatment.”

This phrasing is in reference to Atlanta Motor Speedway, a mile-and-a-half track that SMI converted to race like a superspeedway.

Despite a few clues in the original post, some fans quickly concluded that the track could, or at least should, be Fort Worth’s Texas Motor Speedway. However, in an interview with Jeff Gluck of The Athletic TMS, Mark Faber, the general manager, spoke on this alleged rumor.

Gluck directly asked Faber about this viral post and the subsequent post confirming that it was not a NASCAR-owned track. Faber responded, “Yeah, I mean, that’s just a rumor. That’s just the best way to put it.”

While this does not directly confirm nor deny the rumor, rather downplaying it as just a rumor, earlier in the interview, Faber did speak highly of the improving quality of racing at TMS. “But we analyze this all the time, and we think we’re moving in the right direction,” Faber said. “We’ll take a look at it after the race weekend.”

The Rumor Heard Around the (NASCAR) World

When this rumor arose in mid-April from user Wookie Drives on X, the NASCAR world went wild. Though this rumor was not confirmable, Mike Ford, NASCAR’s Managing Director of Racing Communications, acknowledged the post and confirmed that it was not happening to any NASCAR-owned tracks.

Forde’s post narrowed the field down to Speedway Motorsports’ extensive collection of mile-and-a-half ovals. Most fans hoped the track would be Texas, long loathed for its poor race quality, as the victim of the change. However, these fans seemingly overlooked the fact that the Postman Wookie’s side of the track is “a popular intermediate track.”

We do not know if this rumor is true at all or what track could even be affected, as most suspected Las Vegas Motor Speedway as the other candidate; perhaps after this interview, NASCAR fans can take Texas off their Rumor Mill list of suspects.
