What’s Happening?

Prior to an accident on lap 216 with Katherine Legge, Daniel Suarez was having a decent run Sunday at Phoneix. A recent VLOG on Suarez’s YouTube Channel gives fans a look into the driver’s post-race emotions following his crash with the debuting driver.

  • The incident began when Legge spun entering the backstretch at Phoenix. The wreck collected Suarez, who was running sixth at the time; after repairs, the No. 99 came home 23rd.
  • Since this incident with Suarez, fans have scrutinized NASCAR’s Cup Series approval system. Something that Suarez expressed in this VLOG.
  • Suarez states that this incident is not necessarily on Legge. Rather, it’s on NASCAR to ensure drivers are experienced enough to compete at the Cup Series level. “It’s nothing wrong with her,” said Suarez. “What is wrong is NASCAR; they cannot allow somebody with no experience to run in the Cup Series, plain and simple, plain and simple.”
  • Legge is a multi-faceted veteran racer with multiple wins in the IMSA SportsCar Championship Series and multiple starts in the NTT IndyCar Series. Legge has also made starts in Stock cars in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and ARCA Menards Series.
  • Despite this experience, the Cup Series is almost an entirely different type of stock car racing. When Legge announced her debut on Mar. 3, fans were apprehensive of her decision to jump to this level, as, despite her stellar resume, Legge had almost no time behind the wheel of a NASCAR Next Gen car.
