What’s Happening?

TWG Motorsports CEO Dan Towriss pushed aside the possibility of NASCAR Cup Series driver Carson Hocevar driving a fourth car in the Indianapolis 500 for Andretti Global during a recent interview.

Since Kyle Larson’s first attempt to race in the Indianapolis 500 in 2024, NASCAR fans can’t get the thought of who they would like to see race in the event out of their heads.

Names at the top of that list include future NASCAR Hall of Famers like Kyle Busch and even young stars like Connor Zilisch.

Regardless of who the fans want to see attempt the 1100 miles of racing that make up the Charlotte Indy double on Memorial Day weekend, Jenna Fryer of AP Sports reports that, per TWG Motorsports CEO Dan Towriss, Spire Motorsports driver Carson Hocevar is not on the list for possible entries in 2026.

TWG, which is part of the ownership groups of both Andretti Global and Spire Motorsports, had plans to field a fourth car through Honda’s Andretti Global at the 2026 Indianapolis 500.

However, these plans are no longer going to happen.

Prior to the decision not to field a fourth car, Towriss hinted to Fryer that, for the driver of the car, they could look to drivers outside of IndyCar, but ruled out Hocevar, one of the team’s most popular drivers, as a possible entry.

Of course, there were never any real rumors that Hocevar would run the Indy 500, and even then, the complex nature of manufacturer relationships, with Andretti racing with Honda and Hocevar signed to a Chevrolet team, would have made some form of arrangement nearly impossible.

Even then, much like Kyle Larson’s efforts in the prior two seasons, the prep that goes into racing in the Indianapolis 500 takes months, with drivers needing to get in shape, and teams needing to make plans both in Charlotte and Indianapolis to ensure drivers meet their responsibilities in each.

Nonetheless, with Towriss bringing Hocevar’s name into the mix and the discussion of NASCAR drivers attempting the Indy 500 likely to continue into the next few seasons, look for fans to consistently pitch the idea of the Michigan native joining the field alongside faces like Busch and Zilisch.

Andretti’s Fourth Car

Much like NASCAR teams in the Daytona 500, IndyCar teams are no strangers to adding entries to their lineups for the Indianapolis 500.

Last season, Andretti did so for semi-retired, and now fully retired, IndyCar driver Marco Andretti.

With Andretti’s recent retirement, and the geopolitical shakeups to the Formula One and Formula Two schedules, rumors and speculation swept about that former Andretti driver, and current Cadillac F1 prospect Colton Herta, could be in that fourth car, as the F2 schedule was clear for that portion of the season.

But, now that F2 has added races during the leadup to and on raceday of the Indianapolis 500, Herta will not be able to race in the event, something Towriss now says has led them to retract plans for a fourth car and focus on their current three-driver lineup of Will Power, Kyle Kirkwood, and Marcus Ericsson.
