What’s Happening?

Sonoma Raceway provided chaos, but not much suspense. Drivers slipped, slid, and shoved their way through one of the slickest road course races in recent memory. Incidents stacked up from the drop of the green as drivers overdrove corners and paid the price. But despite the action throughout the field, the outcome never felt in doubt as Shane van Gisbergen took control early and never looked back. • Eric noted how the slick track surface led to plenty of mistakes and drama, but the lack of a serious challenge up front kept the intensity in check, as Shane van Gisbergen once again proved he’s in a league of his own on road courses, taking command early and maintaining it with ease. He completes saying that SVG’s talent should be appreciated.
• Although the mid-pack scuffles were entertaining, the race lacked a defining moment or a late surge to elevate it beyond “just fine.”
• Eric gave Sonoma the same 65% rating he gave Chicago, a solid, slightly above-average outing, but not one that will be remembered long-term.
• Eric thought it wasn’t a barn burner, but it was a competent race with flashes of excitement. For those hoping for a late-race showdown or some strategy shake-up, it just never came together. He believes Sonoma delivered drama, but not necessarily tension.
