What’s Happening?

Legacy Motor Club announced Thursday afternoon that their owner, seven-time NASCAR Champion Jimmie Johnson, will enter his 22nd Daytona 500. Johnson won the race in 2005 and 2013 and has entered it as an open car since 2023.

  • Johnson will enter just two races in 2025 in the No. 84. The first will be the Daytona 500, and the second will be the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte. For both races, sponsor Carvanna will be on the hood of his Toyota.
  • Following his 2020 retirement, Johnson floated around other racing series, including IndyCar. However, he returned to NASCAR in 2023 as a co-owner and part-time driver for LMC. If he makes the 500 and qualifies for the 600, These races will be No. 699 and 700 of Johnson’s legendary career.
  • Since Johnson returned to part-time racing in 2023, fans have wondered when his final season will be. In 2023, he entered three races and bumped that up to nine in 2024. With just two announced races on his schedule in 2025, there is a real chance this is his final multi-race season.

In his two part-time seasons, Johnson, at No. 84, has failed to reach the top-20. His best finish so far came at last season’s finale in Phoenix, where he finished 26th. In his two Daytona 500 entries, Johnson’s best was the 2023 race. That evening, a late crash while racing at the front of the pack ended Johnson’s day.

To make the race, Johnson will have to beat out a packed class of open entries for the 2025 Daytona 500. Johnson almost missed the race last season after struggling in practice and his Duel race.
