What’s the Latest on Truex?

Following another stellar part-time NASCAR Xfinity Series season, fans entered the offseason with high hopes for NASCAR veteran Ryan Truex. In recent years, he made consistent part-time starts with Joe Gibbs Racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Despite success in those starts, he had yet to get a full-time ride entering this season.

Unfortunately, it does not look like 2025 will be the year he gets a full-time racing gig. However, Truex will be full-time in a different role for JGR this season. In an interview with Jeff Gluck of the Athletic, Truex revealed he will be the full-time reserve driver for JGR.

This new role entails Truex covering for JGR’s Xfinity and Cup Series drivers in the event they cannot compete. His responsibilities include constant simulator testing to learn how to race like each of his fellow JGR drivers at each track and need to be prepared to take over at any track in any car at any time.

Truex Entering 2025

Entering 2025, Truex looked like he could have a full-time opportunity in the Xfinity Series. His 2024 campaign saw the veteran enter 11 races and score six top-tens, three top-fives, and two wins.

Truex broke out of his journeyman slump in 2023, winning at what is the closest thing the New Jersey driver has to a home track. He followed this win at Dover Motor Speedway with victories at Dover and Daytona and Daytona this season.

The major problem Truex has had in his 15-year NASCAR career is sponsorship. In the majority of his part-time starts with JGR, Truex has been sponsored by Toyota-related brands such as Toyota Genuine Parts. This new role does not mean that Truex is done racing. However, it does mean his full-time hopes, at least for 2025, are done.
